FB_IMG_1468617382400UPND presidential candidate Hakainde Hichilema has accused President Edgar Lungu and his government of not doing enough to end political violence in the country.

Speaking to journalists in Lusaka this afternoon, shortly after attending an ECZ convened meeting on peace, Hichilema said that President Edgar Lungu and his administration have not acted responsibly to end violence.

Hichilema stressed the need for all political players to uphold peace and denounce violence in the strongest terms. He called on the President to get serious about addressing the escalating violence in the country by ensuring all citizens are offered the protection of the law and law enforcement officials, regardless of their political affiliation, and that criminals face justice for their offenses.

A peace accord was proposed during the meeting, similar to the one previously signed during the Church convened political parties Indaba earlier in the year.

Hichilema stated that in order to make sure this accord has more weight than the last document, which was quickly cast aside by the PF, the new accord must specify the rights and obligations to be safe-guarded under the arrangement, including freedom of movement and freedom to campaign.

The UPND President further said it is shameful for any sitting President to watch his people being killed by those wearing state-issued uniforms, without being serious about providing answers and overseeing justice.
