Civil Society leader MacDonald Chipenzi who has been critical of PF government has praised President Edgar Lungu for including some senior citizens on the list of some prisoners he released on Christmas.

Chipenzi says President Lungu’s gesture needs to be praised.
He says:
The releasing of 125 senior citizens aged 65 years old and above who were serving various sentences in various correctional facilities in Zambia using the prerogative of Mercy contained in Article 97 of the Constitution by President Edgar Chagwa Lungu on the eve of the Christmas Day is a good gesture, in my view.
Not knowing how many senior citizens are serving various sentences across the country, the release of the 125, though a short term measure, will contribute to a slight reduction in congestion current characterizing Correctional Facilities in Zambia.
Hope, the wheel of the country’s criminal justice system in 2018 will move fast to help clear the backlog of cases which has made some people spend years in Remand Correctional Facilities as if they are already convicts.
Let us see Chief Justice Irene Mambilima directing his men and women in the wigs to clear all long standing cases in our courts esp those cases that have put suspects in Remand Correctional Facilities for years as if they are already convict violating the constitution that considers every suspect innocent till proven guilty by a competent court.

  1. Chipenzi kudos should be given on general performance and not on isolated acts! Because even milon brothers could buy a bag of mealie meal for their mother and be praised on that particular act. praise should NOT go to people when they have voted NOT to pay pensioners while they pay themselves large amounts of money!
