Katongo’s behaviour immoral, inhuman – NDC

Katongo after he was unveiled as the NDC candidate for the Chilanga by-election

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described the behavior exhibited by its former candidate for the Chilanga parliamentary by-election as “simply immoral, out of this world and inhuman”.

And NDC member Saboi Imboela says she feels ashamed as she was the one who proposed Katongo’s name to the party.

Chilanga businessman Katongo was adopted by the NDC as its candidate but he failed to show up to file in his nominations resulting in the opposition party not to field a candidate for the Chilanga by-election.

But three days later, Katongo resurfaced to announce his defection to the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) at a media briefing in Lusaka.

He claimed he did not disappear on his former party but merely refrained from going to file in the nomination after carefully going through the PF ideologies.

“It’s obvious, I will rally behind our candidate Maria Langa and will support her fully. I have not been bought by the Patriotic Front, I realised and went through their ideologies, I think they are the best to work with. Those ( stories about being bought) are not true allegations. I have a heart for the people of Chilanga, I am a Chilanga person, born and bred in Chilanga. I know the problems the people of Chilanga are going through, I have a heart for Chilanga and I am ready to help in whichever way,” Katongo told journalists.

He further said he had been a member of the NDC since inception and that initially, he wanted to stand as an independent candidate in the Chilanga by-election.

“I never disappeared, I was very much around, I was at home and the reason I did not go to file in is because the ideologies of NDC did not convince me to go and file in but my conscience could not allow me to go ahead and file in. I have been a member of NDC from inception I must say; NDC has been in existence for six months. I can confirm that I had intruders that came to my house and deflated the tyres to my vehicle and after calling the police, they disappeared,” claimed Katongo.

But in a brief media statement released by the party’s media team yesterday, the NDC said it will not dwell on the “trivialities” of Katongo’s reasons for ditching the party but will focus its energies on discussing pertinent issues affecting Zambians.

“The National Democratic Congress NDC has received numerous queries as regard the defection of Mr. Webster Katongo to the PF,” reads the statement. “As a party, we wouldn’t want to go into the trivialities that Mr. Katongo has raised on why he has left the NDC.

“NDC is a big movement and would rather concentrate and centre its energies discussing pertinent issues affecting the Zambian populous.”

The opposition party however said Katongo’s behavior is immoral and inhuman but wished him well in his future political endeavours.

“The treacherous behavior exhibited by Mr. Katongo is not only beyond imagination and comprehension, but is simply immoral, out of this world and inhuman.

“The NDC wishes Mr. Katongo the best of luck in his future political endeavours.”

And musician-turned politician Saboi Imboela has expressed shame and regret for introducing Katongo to the party.

“Eish, I’m ashamed to talk becoz [sic] I’m the one that took his name to the party…. Pressure was growing in the party that I stand in Chilanga so I knew that if I didn’t find a candidate I wud [sic] be the candidate and I just wasn’t ready for that. So I went into Chilanga in search for a candidate. Someone recommended Webster Katongo and also gave him my number. He called me and we met at woodlands pick and pay,” Imboela wrote on Facebook.

“That was about 3 months ago. Personally I was not so impressed with him and he will tell u that after our meeting I never got back to him. But I still submitted his name to the party and recommended that he be considered as one of the candidates.”

She further narrated: “As of last week almost all candidates we had said they didn’t have money and just like in the other elections it meant that spending everything on them from the nomination fee. Only Webster claimed to have money and ready to put in 4 vehicles and a bit of money to supplement what the party wud [sic] put in. So he bit [sic] the others based on that.”

Imboela dismissed Katongo’s claims that he had been a member of the NDC since inception, saying he was only a member of the opposition party for one and a half days.

“Contrary to the lies he said earlier that he had been NDC for 6 months, he was only NDC for one and a half days. He even talked of NDC ideologies which he has actually never seen becoz [sic] this is the time we shud [sic] have now sat with him to orient him on that. To cut the long story short he has never been a member of NDC and this was supposed to be the beginning but alas he was just our member for one and a half days before PF bought him. And I guess at a very cheap price becoz [sic] the threats of his illegal business they shared with us plus hunger must have made his value very very low…. No wonder his niece Charmaine beat him up lol….”

  3. Lack of seriousness I the part of the party is also a factor in this issue. How could they adopt a person who has never been their member? And such morons should be taught lessons that they will never forget. This Katongo animal was probably a PF mole in NDC. Such rodents need to be eliminated. I wonder why it didn’t announce it’s intetions to pull out way before nomination day to allow the party to pick an alternativie candidate. Chi kolwe chalitumpa sana

  4. Between Katongo on one hand and Chishimba Kambwili who leads the NDC but claims to be a member of PF,which one of the two has moral uprightness?
