Kanyama Level One Hospital in Lusaka has made history in the country after delivering more babies than any other facility in Zambia, with between 35 and 50 births recorded daily.

According to Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. James Nyirenda the high numbers are linked to the township’s dense population.

On busy days, the facility attends to as many as 800 patients.

Dr. Nyirenda spoke in Lusaka during the handover of neonatal equipment worth over K300,000 donated by Access to Health Zambia.

He said the new equipment will strengthen the hospital’s capacity to manage mothers and newborns with complications on site.

That means fewer referrals to the University Teaching Hospital, which has previously been overwhelmed with cases from the area.

The donation is expected to help the busy maternity and neonatal units cope with demand and improve care for mothers and babies in Kanyama and surrounding communities.
