NDC consultant Chishimba Kambwili will spend a night in jail after Luanshya Police refused to grant him bond on a charge of unlawful assembly.

And UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has called for the immediate release of Kambwili, saying there was no need to treat him like an armed bandit especially at a time the country is gearing up for the dialogue process.

Kambwili, who is Roan member of Parliament has been arrested and charged with unlawful assembly, in connection with the meeting he held with a group of protesting AVIC International workers at his residence in Luanshya over the weekend.

The NDC defacto leader was apprehended at Police Headquarters in Lusaka this morning before being bundled into a police Land Cruiser and driven to Luanshya.

He had gone to lodge a formal complaint on the alleged unprofessional conduct of Copperbelt police commissioner Charity Katanga.

Kambwili’s legal team had yesterday written to Luanshya Police requesting them to defer the questioning of their client to next week to enable him attend a court date on Friday but Katanga flatly denied the request.

One of his Lawyers Evaristo Mukonka who confirmed his arrest told journalists in Luanshya that Kambwili will appear in the Luanshya Magistrate Court tomorrow.

And UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema, himself a victim of numerous arrests and detentions by the PF regime, said: “We call for the immediate release of the NDC consultant Dr. Chishimba Kambwili from police custody.

“As a country, we do not need to treat each other like this especially in the midst of the dialogue process in the country.

“As far as we are concerned, Dr. Kambwili did not refuse to answer the police callout in Luanshya.

He added: “All he did was to merely request for a date next week so he could attend to court matters in Lusaka tomorrow.

“There was no need to bundle him like an armed bandit this morning and drive him to Luanshya police.”
