Zambia right now looks more like a kids’ club than a mature nation with mature mindsets, a Zambian law Lecturer based in Canada has told Zambian Eye’s Hot Seat programme.

Discussing the presidential legal immunity topic on Zambian Eye Facebook live texting interview Tuesday night, Charles Mwewa charged that it will be madiness to lift President Edgar Lungu’s immunity.

“Zambia right now looks more like a kids’ club than a mature nation with mature mindsets. I would have been the first to hail the removal of immunity of former President Chiluba on July 16, 2002 and then of President Banda on March 15, 2013. To remove the immunity of one president in 50 years may be normal, two in a space of 10 years is abnormal, if as the chorus sings of President Lungu in barely a period of three years, that will be madness,” Mwewa responded when asked by host Ra Shai on his views about calls to lift President Lungu’s immunity.

He added: “Now, I understand feelings may be hard. Some may not like Chiluba or Banda or Lungu. Bottomline, however, is that these all are constitutionally elected presidents. They deserve a level of immunity befitting Heads of Nations. For example, if you remove immunity, it is like stripping a person naked before the entire world. It is disheartening as it is repugnant. We may desire to do so at the expense of cheapening our presidency.

We should in the first place elect vetted presidents so that we are saved from this malaise. We should run from the temptation to each time we hate a leader rush to threatening them of immunity removal. In the end, no-one will covet the office. And however careful one wants to be, the presidency is flawed with bad decisions, and we should protect the holders from shame. Only in PURELY NATIONAL INTEREST should we canvass ideas of immunity lifting otherwise we risk making Zambia a laughing stock.”
