It doesn’t matter if UPND shuns national events, they are irrelevant – Mwila

The United Party for National Development (UPND) is irrelevant and it matters not when they shun national events, ruling Patriotic Front (PF) secretary general, Davies Mwila has charged.

And veteran politician and freedom fighter Sikota Wina has castigated the UPND for staying away from Independence celebrations at State House.

In an interview with journalists on the side-lines of the Zambia’s 52nd Independence Day commemorations at State House, Mwila said opposition political parties that shun national events in Zambia should consider themselves irrelevant.

However, Mwila contradicted himself when he said it was regrettable that UPND leader, Hakainde Hichilema, shunned the 2016 independence celebrations when he is a major opposition leader He said opposition political party leaders should strive to participate in Independence Days and any other national events.

“Independence Day celebrations are beyond partisan politics. It is very regrettable that Mr Hichilema can shun such an event when this year’s theme is about unity,” he said.

The celebration was attended by Opposition FDD leader Edith Nawakwi and her spokesperson Anthoni Mwanza, Peoples Party Leader Mike Mulongoti and PF- pro opposition parties representes by Pastor Dan Puls, Edwin Sakala, Cozmo Mumba and other smaller parties.

And Wina sad it is ridiculous for some opposition political parties to shun the Independence Day celebrations because the event goes beyond political affiliations,  Wina has said

“This is a day when we celebrate our freedom from bondage, and one shunning such an event is giving a message that they lack that feeling of being happy that we got Independence.

“Independence Day celebrations are way beyond political affiliation. We are not celebrating a particular party, but we are celebrating our nationhood. So unless one is annoyed with our nationhood, one should definitely not participate in celebrating it,” Wina said.

“National events like Independence give us an opportunity to get together and so political differences must be handled at other fora other than this. There is need to respect the Independence Day because a lot of sacrifices were made to attain the freedom that Zambia is enjoying now,” he said.

But when contacted for a comment by Zambian Eye, UPND SG said his phone’s battery has discharged and he could only discuss the matter later.

Major opposition parties have always absconded from national events and assignments, including the now ruling PF, who once labeled its MPs as rebels for accepting to be part of the ill-fated National Constitution Conference to draft the new constitution.

  1. President Hakainde Hichilema could not attend independence celebrations as he had no police permit to assemble with more than two people. Doing so would have seen him back in the PF slammer, and his supporters brutalized and detained by the PF barbaric police. So, he did well to stay away.

  5. HH, GBM and UPND are in the Courts challenging the re-election of Lungu as President of Zambia.Until these Petetions are heard, determined and disposed off and a Winmer declared HH & GBM cannot attend a function presided over by Lungu becoz as of now he is illegal and illegitimate. So until Lungu’s legitimacy is restored HH,GBM and UPND have no basis to recognise Lungu and his illegitimate govt. Period.

  8. What about the UPND members that are in police cells when they have done nothing criminal. So to be seen enjoying with ECL would be betraying such comrades. I am also very disappointed with Sikota Wina. Mr. Wina is part of team that created pressure on the Litunga to sign the agreement which Kaunda happily abrogated two years latter in 1968. At the moment many lozis have been killed by the Zambian Government while others are serving prison sentences on fake charges of treason. Mr. Wina should feel sorry for his role in bringing Barotseland in this failed state called Zambia. I am asking this old man to reflect on the amount of suffering that he has brought on his people before blaming UPND for their actions. At the end what is their to celebrate. Just fifty two years of deceptive rule and lies.

  9. Why attend when you know PF cadres are waiting to brutise you the way Zambia Police brutised the helpless Komboni Radio lady and cadres brutised FAZ President Kamanga at the Cathedral in Lusaka in the presence of President Lungu?

HH should actually avoid all national gatherings organised by the ruling party officials.

The PF leadership are not sincere.

  12. Mwila clearly knows that UPND is an aggrieved party. The entire membership (I.e. half of this country ) believes that they were robbed of the election that HH won. It is therefore folly of any fair minded person to think that HH should be expected to wine and dine with EDgar Lungu when has taken the matter to court and half of the prisons are full of his supporters.

Would it be logical for a woman being raped to scumb to the rapist simply because the act is being performed. In other words, does make sense to any one to expect a woman to enjoy sex when she is being raped because it has happened. Mwila expects HH to conform to his icachi way of think because PF claims they won the election when their president did not and is not upholding the rule of law. HH does not want to be on the wrong side of history.

We are a peace loving nation, but shouldn’t be taken to be fools.

Mwila please inform your president that he failed to uphold and respect the Zambian consititution when he did not handover power to the speaker when the aggieved part successfully logged in the election petition.

  14. Forgive Mwila. He has low analytical abilities because he is a grade seven and that is why he was not made MP. That is why the tone of his language is that of a cadre. He cannot use reasoning to convince people but he uses body language and a cadre tone.

  16. Mwila is as foolish as Musoni. How does he think a Zambian citizen could be irrelevant in Zambian affairs. No wonder he is this ugly. HH should only be attending functions where PF wants his presence as if he is a prisoner eh? Stupid thinking by these thieves.

  17. How anybody can take seriously comments by the uneducated SG who has voted himself out of the office?
On the other hand, if it was not for the members of PF “intelligentsia” (LOL), HH and GBM will not be appearing daily in the news. It is PF which is making HH and GBM relevant.

  18. UPND will never be irrelevant to Zambia they have credible leaders and more than 50% of Zambia’s population going by the just ended (though not concluded) elections support them this time round. So who is Mwila representing? or is it a question of sour grapes?
