UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has demanded that law enforcement agencies immediately investigate allegations that a close associate of President Edgar Lungu, Valden Findlay, is involved in drug trafficking.

Yesterday, NDC leader Chishimba Kambwili challenged President Lungu to disclose the nature of his relationship with Findlay whom he says is a convicted drug baron and is on the FBI wanted list. He further insinuated that the presidential jet is being used to transport Findlay’s drugs.

Hichilema in a statement today has described the allegations as alarming and potentially damaging to Zambia’s image.

“We are alarmed by the news of a drug related court hearing in the United States that appear to link certain individuals connected to the Zambian State House,” Hichilema said.

“In view of the foregoing, we call upon our investigative institutions and other relevant government organs to liaise with their counterparts in the United States, so that this matter that has the potential to undermine Zambia’s integrity in the eyes of the international community and at home, is brought to a speedy conclusion. The Zambian citizens have a right to know.”

The opposition leader has since challenged State House to clear the air of the allegations.

“We call upon Mr Edgar Lungu and the PF to immediately clear the air over these allegations that seriously undermines the rule of law in Zambia.

“They owe it to our nation and our people to account for any allegation of criminality that has probable consequences that threaten peace and security in our nation,” stated Hichilema.
