Illegal Miner dies in Chingola

An-18-year-old man of Chingola, Chiwempala area has died in an illegal mine accident when a pile of earth and rocks collapsed on him at Cop A dump site.

The victim, identified as Samuel Lingweli, was fatally injured when a pile of earth and rocks collapsed on him while he was working alongside with his friends.

Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer Peacewell Mweemba said the incident occurred around 09:30 hours and the victim suffered a broken neck and spinal cord, as well as bleeding from the mouth and nose.

Mweemba said brief facts are that today February 27, 2024 around 08:00 hours the now victim together with some friends went to work at Cop A dump site as illegal miners as they always do to extract copper ore materials.

He said whilst working a pile of earth mixed with some rocks collapsed and fell on him before he could run for safety.

Mweemba said he was later retrieved and rushed to Chawama Mini Hospital and was pronounced dead upon arrival.

“Police rushed to the hospital and inspected the body and noticed some visible injuries being broken neck and spinal cord, bleeding from the mouth and nose. BID form issued and the body has been taken to Nchanga North General Hospital mortuary awaiting burial,” he said.

He said Chiwempala Police Station has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, Illegal mining activities remain a concern in the region, and law enforcement agencies continue to work tirelessly to address the issue and ensure the safety of community members.
