United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema has maintained that he won last week’s Presidential election but says he was not declared winner because he is Tonga by tribe.

Hichilema who spoke for the first time since results were announced told the press in Lusaka at Cresta Golf View hotel on Monday that it had been discussed that he had won the presidential by-election but could not be declared winner because of his tribe.

“It was discussed on Thursday that I had won the election” Hichilema explained. “They said I couldn’t be president because I am Tonga… Where do you want us to go? I was not there when my father was loving my mother, It just happened. You are punishing the wrong person.”

Edgar Lungu of the ruling Patriotic Front was declared winner of the poll with 27, 000 votes against Hichilema which is the closest election in the country’s history.

Hichilema has disputed the election results saying the Electoral Commission of Zambia manipulated it in favour of Lungu.

The opposition leader has called for transperancy on how results are transmitted from polling centres to the point of announcement at the national totaling centre. He said this need to be done in the 2016 General election.
