I have spent a good amount of time and chances abroad thinking, writing and contributing to all things Zambia. I have not done this because of lack of things to do in Canada. For the most part, my plate is full every day. I have to run a business, lecture, provide consultancy services and write. I can easily forget about Zambia as life in the West is based on what you do; if you stop doing something, life, literally, comes to stand still. So, you may ask, “Why does Charles love Zambia so much that he can devote so much time to following events there and contributing through articles, or otherwise?” The answer is simple. I loved Zambia even before I left Zambia. My relatives live in Zambia. My early childhood was experienced in Zambia, and in my view, there is more work to be done to improve Zambia. That, in essence, is why I love Zambia.
Why the Name: “I Love Zambia”?
You can agree with me, that over 90% of reports, discussions and even political chit-chats we hear every day, seem to denigrate the very brand that we desire to enhance. Zambia can only be developed by those with keen and self-interest in it. It cannot be developed and improved by those who undermine it. If we don’t love a thing, it diminishes; if we love it, it increases. The rationale fits the purpose here. I want people to love Zambia with me and to say positive things and encouraging things about Zambia. This is not naïvete. We all know that, currently, we are struggling as a country. But the truth is, there is hope for tomorrow. I want my children, nieces and nephews and those who will come after us to find a better Zambia than we found it. Therefore, I will be critical in some respects. But overall, I will attempt to find common ground, and where possible, praise good progress, and chastise litharge and corruption. This is how civilized conversations are undertaken.
How the Column will Work
Each week I will follow the stories making news in Zambia, mostly from our The Zambian Eye. I will utilize an objective criterion. This means that I will read with open-mindedness. I will then select what I will deem as leading, progressive or positive stories and highlight their efficacy and essence and how that can help move the country forward. Sometimes, I will as well make commentary on stories and events that keep us in bondage and relegate us to where we are.
Personal Commentary/Opinion
At the end of each analysis, I will issue my personal opinion and provide my own observable solutions. I believe that it is democratic to criticize lack of progress. However, I believe, too, that it is even better to offer solutions. In Zambia, sometimes we only criticize and do not have other options to offer. I will endeavor to upset that status quo.
Frequency
The column will be written on each Friday of the week. This is because, by then, I would have captured all the leading stories of the week. Your comments and contributions will be welcome.
