Hunger situation in Luapula desperate – MP

Patriotic Front (PF) Luapula Member of Parliament Emerine Kabanshi has described the hunger situation in her constituency as desperate.

Kabanshi has revealed that her constituency is one of the most affected by floods and has commended Roman Catholic bishops and other cooperating partners for supplementing government efforts in addressing the hunger situation in the country and her constituency in particular.

She was speaking at a high level policy dialogue with cooperating partners in Lusaka today which was attended by ministers and other senior government officials.

And National Development Planning Minister Alexander Chiteme says appropriate actions have been taken to address all cases of food insecurity verified by responsible agencies.

Chiteme has indicated that it is the intention of government to enhance conditions for dialogue with all concerned parties in matters of national development.

Meanwhile, The Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) through Caritas Zambia in collaboration with other cooperating partners is expected to spend US$9.4 million towards relief food and other humanitarian services to hunger stricken areas in the country.

The project which will be undertaken in conjunction with cooperating partners such as catholic relief services, Norwegian church aid and CAFOD is targeting 42,000 households in different parts of zambia that were affected by drought and floods.

And  Caritas Zambia Bishop Director, Evans Chinyembe has since called on other stakeholders to come on board and help in raising the targeted $9.4 million.
