HH revels in Lupososhi victory

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has thanked the people of Ilambo Ward in Lupososhi District, Northern Province for giving his party a resounding victory in a recently held local government by-election.

And former State House press aide Dickson Jere says the UPND’s defeat of the Patriotic Front in the by-election should serve as a wake up call for the ruling party because Lupososhi “is more than its bedroom”.

The ruling PF were odds-on favourites to retain the Ilambo Ward seat – which fell vacant following the death of the incumbent PF councillor – not only because the area falls under a constituency that is held by Lazarus Chungu, the Northern Province Minister and PF provincial chairperson, but because the area is of historical significance to the PF.

However, the electorate had other ideas, giving the UPND’s Kelvin Mwansa a major victory with 809 votes against the PF’s Justin Chola who polled 636 votes.

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema is understandably ecstatic, following a morale boosting victory in an opponent’s traditional stronghold.

“We thank the people of Lupososhi in Ilambo ward of Northern province for choosing UPND. It’s a great feeling to see our growth in the great Northern Province! Abena Lupososhi ba punkamo muli Hope na Help na Lesa pa ntashi. #ZambiaForward,” Hichilema tweeted this morning.

The opposition leader further wrote on his Facebook page: “Abena Lupososhi ba punkamo muli Hope na Help na Lesa pa ntashi.

“Congratulations to the people of Lupososhi in Ilambo ward of Northern province for voting for your party of choice, UPND. We shall create time to come and physically thank you for choosing to stand with the right team.

“Kelvin Mwansa is our new councillor there and we will together with him deliver to our people as he is the stepping stone to Zambia’s economic freedom.”

And Lusaka lawyer Dickson Jere, who served as fourth President Rupiah Banda’s press aide, believes the ruling PF should be very worried after losing in an area that is widely considered to be its birthplace.

“The first-ever parliamentary seat for the Patriotic Front (PF) to win after its formation in 2001 was Lupososhi,” Jere wrote on his Facebook page. “That seat was won by my friend Musonda Mpakata, who is the outgoing ZICTA chairman and current PF Member of Central Committee (MCC). The mighty MMD then was badly defeated in its perceived stronghold of Northern Province. Therefore, no history of PF can be written without the mention of Lupososhi constituency! The place is significant in many ways…”

“But for the PF to lose a local government seat there is telling… Lupososhi is not mere bedroom for the PF but “kuchipinda”! Whether it was wrong candidate or wrong campaign strategy – the truth remains that the defeat is wake up call for PF in the area.”
