UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema last night addressed between 200 and 300 young Zambian entrepreneurs and business professionals at Startup Junction’s monthly entrepreneurship networking event at Protea Hotel, Arcades.

Hichilema, an accomplished businessman in his own right, started out by applauding Startup Junction’s initiative in creating a networking platform that facilitates collaboration, learning and knowledge-transfer through mentorship.

The address was focused on business matters, drawing on both Hichilema’s training as an economist and his personal experience working in and running businesses. In responding to the question of what it takes to succeed the UPND leader stressed the importance of a serious and focussed mindset.

The opposition leader took his presentation back to the fundamentals of economics with a simple equation of investment and consumption, noting the specific characteristics of the Zambian economy which faces a number of challenges that need to be factored in.

Drawing on his business experience, he also talked about the broader conditions that need to be in place to create an environment in which entrepreneurs and strong performers can come through and shine. In particular, he spoke about some of the areas in which Zambia has been noticeably lacking, such as stability in policies and the legal and regulatory framework. He stressed the importance of a functioning legal system in order to support businesses and provide a channel of recourse when contractors do not uphold their obligations.

In response to a number of questions from the audience, Hichilema talked about some of the challenges he has faced in business and how he overcame and learnt from them, as well as some of the temptations that have caused many to trip up, notably through prioritisation of prestigious appointments over a focus on results.

Looking around at the young, enthusiastic and energetic audience, Hichilema expressed his thanks to the organisers saying he had greatly enjoyed the chance to meet budding entrepreneurs and exchange stories. In conclusion, he encouraged others to get involved and for those who have experience which others could learn from to consider mentorship activities.

In summing up his presentation, Hichilema remarked, “Clearly we just need the right policy framework and targeted youth support programmes for us to produce a strong middle class in this beautiful country that is endowed with so many resources and opportunities.”HH Startup Junction Taking Questions
