Patriotic Front Members should know that HH was not in government when Fredrick Chiluba was selling the mines. He was neither a government agent but was rather helping the MMD regime as one of the 120 Zambian Economists called by Fredrick Chiluba to try to value the mines.
At the time of privatisation, HH was already a wealthy man with a lot of investments in South Africa and in America. He was just called by President Chiluba to be among the 120 senior government economists to try and value the mines on behalf of the government.
People who are talking about privatization are either ignorant about the whole issue or are just deliberately doing so to scandalize HH.
Ask Madam Edith Nawakwi the Finance Minister at that time and she will tell you the truth that HH was never involved in any under valuing the mines. We are still blessed as a country because the one who was Finance Minister at that time is still alive and active in politics. Nawakwi would have been in forefront condemning HH if he was really guilty.
In Zambia its like every God chosen person has to undergo accusations. Look at how the Late President Sata (MHSRIP) suffered before being elected. The same people that are in PF today insulting HH (Bowman Lusambo and Dora Siliya) were the ones who were in forefront of calling our father Micheal Sata as a man who wanted to promote homosexual. Homosexual against Micheal Sata was like a national anthem for Dora Silya and Lusambo. Today it is heartbreaking to see the same people that insulted our departed leader being given front seats in PF and Government while members that laboured for the party are still wallowing in poverty after spending all they had to make the party grow despite persecution.
The PF is now desperate as it has run out of campaign strategy hence to resort to tribalism, privatization and violence forgetting that all those are outdated political gimmicks.

At a tender age of 27, HH already had companies? Which ones and how many? HH bought undervalued companies after the govt of FTJ paid him USD 12 million for privatising Luanshya mine. After that failed privatisation, do you know how many miners died of depression? Before privatisation, HH had nothing to talk about. He couldint buy anything from the audit fees he was receiving in cash then put in the office drawers

Dr Bwalya yours is a factual piece but being at UNZA you understand the variety and absorption capacities of students you try to impart knowledge to! On the HH issue and sale of mines you still have one track minded coconut heads who in denial will not accept your stated fact but choose to believe what pleases them mostly out of hate and envy! Dr. Kaunda has kept quiet on Barotse issue treading the ground of Achan of the Bible, While Nawakwi has kept all her comments under her feet and many other people who know the truth about many issues are like Anania and his wife Safira of the book of Acts chapter 5. Why can’t we live upright even in politics?
Hakainde Hichilema has proved to be a good leader with a vision and let us support him or oppose his ideas with dignity. For almost 10 years he has been explaining what he wants and intends to do for Zambia, yet some greed people have always out of their evil intentions labelled him to be a thief, tribalist and so on and so fourth, yet without substance. He has advised government not to go ahead on several measures of economic policies yet only to U-turn when failure knocks them down. Shame.

Thanks for the clarification from Dr. Bwalya. The problem we have in this country is that, people who got their wealth through stealing/ corrupt means are always suspicious of others who are rich thinking they also accumulated their wealth through the same means. We know such people, even today if they were called upon to explain where the riches they have accumulated so quickly came from, they could fail to explain because they don’ t own any businesses at all which are known by people. Why have the government coffers amazingly dried up in so short a time ? Isn’ t it because of the same people with long fingers who are busy dipping in the coffers every second/ minute, each one for himself/ herself and then in the same vein accuse innocent Zambians who may not even have hands in it ? Some have even left the altar in preference to looting the remaining resources in the national treasury and today, they speak as though they were not men/ women of God ?

Dr Bwalya has done a good thing by coming out with facts.
Do you think those miners and labourers know the facts Dr Bwalya has brought out.
Dr Bwalya’s message needs to be repeated over and over throughout the country and especially in the Copperbelt province where most miners have not time to analyse these things.
It is not fair for HH to lose votes over these lies.
Even the issue of the tribalism at the UNPND convention which brought HH in the party presidency needs to be clarified.
HH did not utter any tribal word during his campaign during the convention.
Those were utterances by other people, who have since defected to PF.

Flashback: IMF, World Bank pressured govt to privatize mines – Nawakwi

FORMER finance minister Edith Nawakwi has revealed that the IMF and the World Bank pressured the Zambian government to privatise the mines on the pretext that copper prices would not increase in 20 years.
According to a report by Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA), Christian Aid, and Scotland’s Aid Agency entitled, “Undermining development, Copper mining in Zambia” dated October 2007, Nawakwi – who is Forum for Democracy and Development president – admitted that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank told the Zambian government that copper prices would never increase, hence they should privatise the mines.
“We were told by advisers, who included the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, that not in my life time would the price of copper change. They put production models on the table and told us that there (was) no copper in Nchanga Mine, Mufulira was supposed to have five years life left and all the production models that could be employed were showing that for the next 20 years, Zambian copper would not make a profit,
” the report quoted Nawakwi as having told its author in an interview on July 26, 2007.
“Conversely, if we privatised we would be able to access debt relief, and this was a huge carrot in front of us – like waving medicine in front of a dying woman. We had no option (but to go ahead).”
According to the report, Nawakwi stated that one of the arguments in favour of privatisation was that it would save the government money by relieving them from propping up an enterprise losing up to US $1 million a day. The report further revealed that in 1999, the donors withheld aid to Zambia until the government agreed to privatise the mines.
“Privatisation of ZCCM (Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines) was a condition repeatedly attached to several loans from both these institutions (IMF and World Bank) and was a pre-condition for Zambia to qualify for debt relief through the Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative. In 1999, with the Zambian government still reluctant to reluctant to privatise ZCCM, major donors withheld some US $530 million in aid until the government conceded,” the report revealed.
“ZCCM’s assets were split into seven sections and sold to various investors, though the company was able to retain shares in some of the units – including in KCM (Konkola Copper Mine) – through the creation of a holding company called ZCCM-IH (Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Investment Holding).”
According to the report, the negotiators argued that increased investment by the new mine owners would generate significant profits that would be channelled back to the Zambian government through taxation and dividends.
You have stated nothing. Facts are never just in figures. But in conscience.Moral consciousness. You do not need an elaboration of such magnitude to convince people about where HH was at that time, but their firms expert advice (where HH was working) to government is what people are querying here. He did not demonstrate patriotism to his country and hence deceived government to sale ZCCM at a give away price. People died mind you as others including my own relatives and yours probably doctor Bwalya, because of reckless advice HH and his colleagues gave government. It is time we pass a law that an expert who gives expert advice to government that is deceptive should be punished. Experts such as HH should just stop masquerading as being rich when they cannot account for their assets properly.
