Gwembe residents sharing water sources with animals

Gwembe in Southern Province is faced with a water crisis and people are now sharing water sources with animals in the mountainous district.

In an exclusive interview with Byta FM News, Nicodemus Kalonga, who hails from Gwembe is concerned that most parts of the district are facing water shortages midyear and has asked government to construct more community dams.

Kalonga has further asked for more boreholes in the district to mitigate the challenge before it gets worse than it is.

And Gwembe Member of Parliament, Malungo Chisangano who described the water situation in the district as terrible, has told Byta FM News that government needs to urgently move in and correct the situation.

Meanwhile, Gwembe District Commissioner Justus Phiri says government through the Town Council will drill boreholes in Gwembe to ease water shortages caused by prolonged dry spells.

He notes that animals are moving longer distances to reach the nearest dam as seasonal streams have already dried up.

Gwembe has six community dams which are in a bad state.
