Gvt suspends cash for work program

The government has for now, suspended the Cash for Work program across the country pending review.

Speaking at a press conference, Ministry of Local Government Permanent Secretary for Administration, Dr. Gabriel Pollen said this has been done to give room for the reconciliation and review of the program guidelines.

He pointed out that this temporary suspension period will facilitate the conducting of a proper review and the implementation of a sound system aimed at preventing the double dipping of government resources.

Pollen said the Ministry as it stands has an outstanding balance of K23 million in unpaid wages under the program, adding that funds have already been allocated to settle the arrears.

He highlighted that some beneficiaries already on other government social schemes, such as the Social Cash Transfer, were also enrolled in the Cash for Work program, thereby causing double dipping on state resources.

Pollen added that such a situation should not be allowed hence the review period will help in that area.

He said it will also consolidate data across ministries to ensure such overlaps are completely eliminated.
