The Ministry of Education has cancelled the nationwide Maths Paper 2 examination for Grade 9s which was supposed to be written today due to leakages.

The paper leaked last week and was being shared by the grade 9s on social media platforms, it went viral, especially among the Lusaka based grade 9s.

Our contributor Yona Musukwa writes that Exams are becoming a sham in Zambia, especially in Lusaka. Exams are now a commodity that can easily be bought, through money, sex and other favours. Even street kids and adults who have nothing to do with exams are having exam leakages and using them to sleep with pupils or make money by selling them.

Worse, even parents are proudly buying exam leakages for their children. Where can a grade 9 get K3,000 to buy a maths paper?

It’s only rural based pupils who are genuinely writing these exams because of their economic status, they have no access to smartphones, social media and Internet.

The Examination Council of Zambia is failing to manage exams. More work is needed at this institution before the whole system become a big joke.
