Govt fails to raise full amount for reconstruction of City Market

Local Government Minister Vincent Mwale says government has only managed to raise 30 percent of the resources needed to rebuild the gutted Lusaka City Market.

Mwale said the failure to raise the required amount has made government reconsider its earlier plan to construct a six story building but will now build a three story.

He said the 30 percent of the budgeted funds have been raised from well-wishers to reconstruct the market.

He said Government failed to raise the K30 million required for the project and only managed to source for K12 million mainly from the business community.

He said government is in talks with a named mining company based on the Copperbelt which has offered to reconstruct the market on the land where the original structure stood.

Mwale said the mining company will only be officially named once all the negotiations are concluded but noted that the mining firm is only waiting for designs from the Ministry of Local Government and Housing before proceeding.

He said the mining company will engage its own contractor to build the market but that government through the Ministry of Local Government and Housing will supervise the works.

The Minister said the new market will accommodate more marketeers and will have modern facilities such as banks and a nursery school.

He said Government will this week put up temporary shelters for the displaced City Market traders to allow them to continue trading on the temporary site even in the rainy season.

Mwale revealed that BSI Steel and another named company dealing in roofing materials will this week donate building materials to the Ministry which will be used to put up temporary shelters.

The country’s biggest trading area was gutted at the height of suspected arsons which rocked the country in the aftermath of the 2016 general elections.

It was after the burning of the market that President Lungu declared a mini State of Emergency which lasted for three months as a way of curtailing arsons in the country.

A number of government buildings, markets and other strategic installations were targeted by arsonists.

  1. Sota where you were involved in he scramble for corrupt activities. It seems to me that our leaders have lost vision of meeting demands of many Zambians but have gone to share every little that comes their way into their pockets. The good thing is that there is a pay day for everyone of us before God our creator.
