Government stops issuance of trading licences to grain buyers

Government has halted the issuing of trading permits to grain buyers following an the growing numbers of briefcase businesses buying the maize directly from the fields of peasant farmers.

Copperbelt Province Minister Japhen Mwakalombe who made the announcement also said all licences issued to grain buyers last year have been cancelled.

Mwakalombe said it is unfortunate that unscrupulous buyers are already buying maize fields from farmers even before the marketing season begins.

The Minister made the sentiments when he handed over hand sanitizers, soap and bags of mealie meal to Chief Nkana for distribution to his subjects in area of jurisdiction, in Lufwanyama.
