Gawa wants Chipata-Mchinji Railway extended to Lusaka

Kalonga Gawa Undi of the Chewa people of Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia has called for the extension of the Chipata-Mchinji Railway line to reach Lusaka.

The traditional leader says this will easy transportation of heavy goods.

Kalonga Gawa Undi has also expressed concern over the poor state of the Katete-Chadiza and Katete-Chanida border roads.

He says there is need for government to ensure that the roads are worked on.

The traditional leader said this through Brigadier General Nebert Phiri, of Chewa Heritage Foundation, Zambia chapter during the Kulamba Ceremony of the Chewa people at Mkaika headquarters in Katete yesterday.

The traditional leader also called for the construction of a government district hospital in Katete.

He said the district currently relies on St. Francis Hospital, which is a mission hospital.

Kalonga Gawa Undi also reminded his Chiefs in the three countries to take the fight against early marriages and teen pregnancies seriously.

Paramount Chief Gawa Undi further urged government to procure enough maize for the nation’s strategic food reserves.

And Minister of Finance Bwalya Ngandu thanked Kalonga Gawa Undi for championing the fight against early marriages.

Dr. Ngandu also talked about the need to document cultural practices.

He also touched on issues of climate change, where he said government is doing everything possible to deal with its impact.
