Fr Chikoya calls on Church to be models of safe environment

Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) General Secretary Fr Emmanuel Chikoya has called on the
Church across the country to be proactive models of sustainable and safe environment.

Speaking when he met Solwezi CCZ Local Christian Chapters at Saint Alban’s Anglican Church in
Solwezi on Monday, 15th October 2018, Fr Chikoya said all Churches affiliated to the Council of
Churches in Zambia must pay particular attention to environmental management, ensuring that
toilets in places of worship are not just in existence but must be clean and safe for congregants and
other members of the public.

Fr Chikoya’s call comes as a reflection on the Cholera outbreak which paralysed Lusaka and other
parts of the Country around October last year and lasted for over five months to be contained.

He says there is need for the Church in the country to have an impact to society by being good at
taking care of the environment around them.

He says good environmental stewardship also includes planting of trees and grass that add beauty to
surroundings.

He says this will go a long way in avoiding disease outbreaks such cholera and other water borne
diseases.

He says maintaining a clean and safe environment is part of spirituality hence all Christians must
ensure that they become models of a safe environment for all.

Fr Chikoya adds that the Church must not disconnect the issues of the environment from theology.
Meanwhile, Fr Chikoya has called on the Church to focus on Jesus Christ as the Country prepares for
the national day of prayer and fasting which falls on October 18.

He has also called on political players to walk the talk after the national day of prayer, fasting and
reconciliation.

Fr Chikoya has since encouraged the Church in Solwezi to be useful like salt that comes out of the
salt cellar to add taste to food by interacting with the communities they live in.

He says the Church being the salt of the earth must come out of the comfort zone and proactively be
useful to Society by preaching good news and condemning anything that does not favour humanity
in the country and beyond.
