The opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) has given the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) a 48-hours ultimatum to revoke its decision to suspend campaigns in Lusaka and Namwala. Districts

The FDD Spokesperson Antonio Mwanza says failure by the Commission to revoke the suspension; the FDD will be left with no option but to seek legal redress.

Mr. Mwanza says the decision by the commission has affected the party’s candidates at all levels in the affected districts.

He says much as the FDD appreciates the importance of enforcing electoral rules and regulations, the party objects to the suspension of the campaigns.

Mr Mwanza says instead of sanctioning the perpetrators of violence, the commission has also punished other parties who have nothing to do with the violence.

Mr. Mwanza states that it is the FDD’s belief that the commission’s powers are restricted to punish perpetrators of violence and not all political players

Meanwhile the UPND has accused the ruling Patriotic Front of defying the ban on campaigns in Lusaka and Namwala districts imposed by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).

UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma says his party has taken note that the PF is still allegedly distributing campaign material in the two Districts.

Mr. Kakoma has told Qfm News by telephone the UPND therefore finds the ban on the campaigns to be favoring the ruling party as opposed to serving the greater good.

But PF Deputy Spokesperson Frank Bwalya has told journalist  in a separate interview that his party has complied with the ban.

Mr. Bwalya says all PF members in the two districts will abide by the ban as the PF is a law abiding political party.
