Esther Lungu’s case resumes today

Former First Lady Esther Lungu is scheduled to appear before the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court today in a high-profile trial where she faces charges of motor vehicle theft and illegal possession of a certificate of title.
The case, presided over by Magistrate Mbuywana Sinvula, resumes after an adjournment on May 19, 2025, due to the court’s unavailability.
During the last hearing, the 66-year-old was accompanied by senior Patriotic Front (PF) members, including faction secretary-general Raphael Nakacinda and ex-Mines Minister Richard Musukwa.
Esther is jointly charged with Kapembwa Lungu, Catherine Banda, and two Lusaka police officers—James Phiri (49) and Lee Chisulo (31).
Court documents reveal that in the first count, the accused allegedly stole a Mitsubishi Canter (registration BAV 5282), worth K320,000, belonging to Elizabeth Change Phiri, between August 9, 2021, and September 30, 2022.
Counts two and three involve the theft of a Toyota Runex (BLA 9772) and a Toyota Allex (BAV 3986), each valued at K110,000, owned by Furhana Patel.
The fourth count accuses them of stealing a title deed for Stand No. S/LUSAKA/0003/2977 in Libala Water Works, Lusaka, worth K1,050,000, also belonging to Elizabeth Change Phiri.
The trial continues today, with further witness testimony expected in a case that has captured significant public attention.
However, it is more likely that the former first lady will not make the court appearance today , as it during a period where is mourning her husband who passed away on June 5, in South Africa and is yet to be buried.
