Efford Chabala’s year in Argentina

In the the 1991/92 Zambian legendary goalkeeper Efford David Chabala played in the Argentine Primera División for Argentinos Juniors.

An unknown to the Argentine public, but a household name on this side of the Atlantic after his heroics in the 1984 East and Central African Championship final in which he saved three penalties in his team’s 3–0 win over Malawi.

Efford was named Zambian Sportsman of the Year in 1985. In 1990 he was chosen by journalists as the best goalkeeper of the African Cup of Nations, which his country finished third in part thanks to his excellent saves.

At Argentinos he forced to play as understudy Carlos Goyén this forced the him to return to Zambia as the lack of game time had affected his game for KK11 as well. He reclaimed his place at Mufulira Wanderers and the national team upon his return.

Chabala died in a plane crash on April 28, 1993, when the plane carrying the Zambian team to Senegal to play in the qualifiers for USA 94′ plunged into the sea. There were no survivors.
