The Constitutional Court has ruled that President Edgar Lungu is currently serving his first term of office as the amount of time he served after Michael Sata’s death cannot be considered a full term.
Delivering the eagerly anticipated judgement today, Constitutional Court Presidential Hilda Chibomba ruled that President Lungu is therefore eligible to contest the 2021 elections.
This is in a case in which PF-sponsored leaders of Christian Democratic Party, Zambia Republican Party and the News Congress Party had asked the court to determine whether President Lungu could stand in the next election.
The three parties had argued that President Lungu cannot be said to have served a five-year term when he only served for less than two years following the death of President Michael Sata.
