The death of former president Edgar Lungu has sparked controversy including doubting his actual death. Lungu died on 5th June 2025 in a Pretoria hospital in South Africa where he had been receiving treatment since January 2025.
His burial has not taken place a month after following a standoff between his family and the Zambian government. Before his death the family says Lungu who had sneaked out of the country after being blocked thrice by the Hakainde Hichilema administration said President Hichilema must not be nearby his body. The family has stuck to this said wish while the government wants President Hichilema to preside over the funeral. The two parties have failed to agree on this part forcing the family to want to burry in South Africa.
Two Church service have been held in South Africa – one for Zambians living in that country and another which was held on the day of the aborted burial after the Zambian government obtained a restraining order. During both service the mortal remains or body was not brought to Church. This has sparked doubts as to whether the former and only surviving former Zambian former president is dead.
“The body has not been seen in public. Is he truly dead?” this is the talk in the streets of Zambia especially among members and supporters of the ruling party, UPND. There is growing demand to see his remains. Others are saying perhaps this is Plan B Lungu talked about.
In a shocking turn of events the death certificate has been leaked. According to the death certificate the cause of death is Septic Shock, Multi-Organ Failure and Oesophageal Cancer.
The hospital that had been attending to him since January cleared him and scheduled a review for three to four months later; he was an outpatient.
A different hospital then called him, recommending minor surgery to improve his health problem. He went for an appointment on a Thursday and underwent a seven-hour operation on Saturday from about 7:00 to 14:00; the operation was successful, and he was taken to a recovery ward, where he was responsive.
On Sunday, the doctors said he had developed a chest infection, and he was put on medication.
On Thursday morning, he passed on.
