The Zambia Under-20 national team will not get the chance to defend their Africa Cup of Nations trophy after suffering a humiliating 3-0 defeat at the hands of Burundi in a second-leg qualifier played at Ukukundo Stadium in Ngozi this afternoon.

The result means Burundi have made it to the Niger 2019 AFCON, having won the two-legged tie 3-1 on aggregate.

The much fancied Zambia went into the match boasting a slender 1-0 advantage but were shorn of the services of influential forward Lameck Banda who was suspended.

  1. In today’s football world, we are gravitating towards parity of strength. The so-called underdos are becoming few, if not disappearing. The recently concluded World Cup has attested to this.

Who could have, even in their wildest dream, think of Burundi defeating Zambia at any football level five to ten years ago? Even in Southern Africa, teams have matured – Lesotho, eSwatini, Namibia, Malawi, Madagascar, etc are no longer predictable losers to Zambia. You under-rate a team, it is at your own peril. Too bad for our boys to be in the annuls of Zambian football history to be the first to lose to Burundi at this crucial moment.
