Dangers of a one man or tribal driven party

Zambia has lately seen one man parties of which some have gone into oblivion while others have made it to govern the country albeit the many challenges.

In the category of one man led parties we can also add parties that are led by a single ethnic group or an ethnic group that feels a particular party is theirs and cannot be headed by a leader from another ethnic group.

In a country that has 73 tribes and an approximate 13 million people, the challenges and expectations of the people are many. When governing a country, no individual can be said to have the solutions for a population of this size.

A party that is started and spearheaded by an individual will seek to follow the ideologies of that individual and in most circumstances any new ideas that are brought forth to the leadership of that party however brilliant, if they do not sit well with the leader of that party will not taken on board.

Individual contributions to the party or governance of the country could be curtailed for fear of the leader if the same leader has dictatorial tendencies. As mentioned in the second paragraph, Zambia constitutes of many tribes and many different challenges. Where people feel marginalized, such situations bring tensions in the governance of the country.

People will tend to think that they do not own the decisions that an individual led party or a single ethnic party make, thereby not agreeing to decisions that are made by the ruling or governing clique.

A marginalised grouping could also feel not being part of the country. This could result into calls for cessation or luck of participation in the matters of governing the country.
Knowledge or intelligence has no tribe and colour. Any individual can acquire knowledge regardless of the region they come from.

Marginalising people because of colour or tribe could be detrimental to the growth of the country and poverty reduction cannot be achieved as the best brains in the country are not utilised.

Individual led parties will have the focus or would pursue the agenda of that particular individual leading it. If the individual has personal battles or grudges to pursue, the country would suffer in that they are also dragged into the same instead of national issues being addressed.

Appointments to key positions in government are done on either tribe or being known to the head of state at the expense of merit. Bootlicking is rife in such situations.
Governance of the country should not be left to an individual or an ethnic led party but it should be a consensus of individuals from different backgrounds regardless of tribe.

  1. You are extremely right my dearest. One such as of now is UPND. For as long as they dont accept and transform, let them remain in the garbage heap of politics. We have so much wanted to join if not sympathise with them but this attitude has scared us away. How can a leader or party be saying we are willing to work with anyone so long we are on top? Humility and civility are such important ingredients in human development…
