Congratulatory messages pour in for KK on his 96th birthday

President Edgar Lungu today made a courtesy call on Zambia’s founding leader Dr Kenneth Kaunda on his 96th birthday.

Lungu said he admires Kaunda’s commitment and the role he played during the country’s independence struggle and for the fight for the liberation of other countries in southern Africa.

In a letter of congratulations, the Zambian leader said the story of Africa could not be told without the mentioning of Kaunda’s name.

Meanwhile, congratulatory messages have continued to pour in for the great statesman, KK, as he is affectionately known.

UNICEF Zambia said: “Wishing H. E. Dr. Kenneth D. Kaunda, founding President of the Republic of Zambia, a happy 96th birthday.”

UPND president Hakainde Hichilema is also one of those who wished the founding father well he said: “We celebrate the life of our founding father KK. We are grateful for you and we join our African family and the world in wishing you a Happy 96th birthday.”

Prominent human rights defender and musician Pilato said: “Happy birthday to the great Dr. Kenneth Kaunda. You didn’t give us what you had but gave us who you were. Thank you.”

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is also African Union (AU) chairperson, also wished KK well and thanked him for his contribution to the struggle for independence in Africa.

He said the former president has continued to be a role model and source of inspiration to the current leadership crop in Africa.

Kaunda ruled Zambia from 1964 when the country got independence to 1991.

He also worked hard in promoting the relationship between China and Zambia.

Kaunda is seen as a pillar in the building of the relation between the two countries.

Kaunda’s connection to China dates back to the 1960s when he went to seek China’s help for the construction of a railway line.
