Choma mealie meal prices remain unchanged

Mealie meal prices have remained the same in Choma district despite government announcing a reduction last week, reports Zambian Eye Correspondent.

A snap check at Choma milling retail shop today showed that a 25 kilo gram bag of breakfast mealie meal is selling at K65.00 while Roller meal is going at Key K45:00.

At Spar Super Market the Mealie Meal  had run out but more stock is expected within the course of the day.

One of the workers who sought anonymity said a new price for both breakfast and roller meal was expected in the shop in line with Government’s announcement.

A Choma resident Febson Muleya noted that the price announced as the reduction is the same price that mealie meal has been sold at in town.

He said that the price is still very high for the ordinary people and needs to be reduced further as the impact will not be felt.

Another resident Emma Mweene who is a trader complained that the price was still high despite Southern province being one of the highest producers of maize.

She noted that the price needs to drop further even to K30.00 for the people to appreciate the reduction.

Choma Milling is the main supplier of mealie meal in the district followed by Superior Milling Company.

Agriculture and Livestock Minister Given Lubinda last week announced the reduction in mealie meal prices saying the wholesale price of a 25kg bag of breakfast will now be K61.00 from K65.00 while the same quantity of roller meal would now sale K44.00 from K52.00
