Chinese contraceptive pill not safe for use in Zambia

The Pharmaceutical Society of Zambia (PSZ) is concerned with the scanty information surrounding the monthly contraceptive which is currently on the Zambian market popularly known as “Chinese pill”.

Society president Jerome Kanyika says investigations have revealed that while members of the public have a view that the preparation is herbal and free from side effects, the pill is in fact not herbal but a high dose of combined hormonal contraceptives containing quinesterol 3miligrams and levonogesterol 6miligrams per tablet.

Kanyika says it has further been established that this product has no marketing authorization from the regulatory body, the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) and therefore not registered and unsuitable for importation, distribution, sale and use in Zambia.

reacting to an article published in yesterday’s Sunday mail titled “Chinese contraceptive pill worries state”, Kanyika is urging medical bodies such as ZAMRA to take the necessary action as soon as possible and ensure this product is removed from the Zambian market.
