Charges slapped on Chitotela are a joke – HH

Hakainde Hichilema has described the two counts of concealing property suspected to be proceeds of crime the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Development Ronald Chitotela has been charged with as a “mere joke”.

And Hichilema has charged that government decided to scrap off meal allowances for students at public universities because the country is bankrupt due to massive looting of public resources by the PF regime.

Commenting on Tuesday’s arrest of the cabinet minister, the opposition UPND leader said in a statement today that Chitotela was not the only one stealing public resources but that the entire PF regime is corrupt and in need of a clean up.

“We have consistently told the nation about the ongoing grand corruption in the country under the PF regime, but they have kept denying,” said Hichilema.

“This week the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) arrested Chitotela and slapped him with what we consider as a mere joke of the offences, because we know there is more, as now reported by media houses.

“But we know it’s not Chitotela alone involved in this looting of public resources matrix in the PF, it’s the entire regime that is rotten to the core and requires a massive clean up and total overhaul.”

Hichilema lamented that the PF administration had bankrupted the country through corrupt practices.

“Massive corruption such as corruptly acquired fire tenders, customised private jets, overpriced ambulances, overpriced road contracts and other construction projects, overpriced fertilizer contracts, fuel procurement contracts and others, are the reasons our children have been denied food at learning institutions as the PF has scrapped their meal allowances.

“As UPND, we had predicted and warned our citizens that the PF would economically bankrupt the country through corruption.”

He explained that the PF embarked on a reckless borrowing spree and applied the resources in none productive sectors and looted the money enriching themselves.

“The result now is that key sectors such as the education, health institutions have no medicines, farmers are not being paid and have no fertilizer and other inputs, government suppliers of goods and services are not being paid, cost of doing business is high, plus excessive and duplicated tax environment, leading to job losses and lack of job creation.”

And Hichilema has charged that the government’s decision to abolish meal allowances for students has far reaching consequences to the individual students and at family level.

“To start with, families are already overstretched as the PF regime has neglected the agriculture sector by the failed e-voucher fertilizer and other inputs system that was cushioning households, especially for the majority rural communities.

“Even for those in some formal employment, there has not been any meaningful increase in their salaries, while the little they earn is heavily taxed, coupled with the continued increase in the cost living, due to among other reasons, increase in fuel prices.

“We are now consigning our youth to evil vices for them to raise some bit of money to buy food and other necessities while at universities as their parents cannot afford due to the economic difficulties they are going through.

“Even worse, our resource envelop, especially in the social sectors, was already affected by donor freeze due to the looting of social cash funds, looting in the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health.

“We have been offering advice and alternatives to our colleagues in PF but they never listened, resulting in the current situation where our economy is now in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU),” stated Hichilema.

  1. Apart from the need for a regime change, what is there for the Opposition to offer the populace?

One has heard of the ever going cliche and unending trite of economic freedom,e rhoteric, but how is the economy to grow before Political Emancipation? Remember, Zambia is not yet Politically Independent, but only attained Colonial Independece in 1962! Zambians, instead, always Dependent on the hands of the few Political Masters, belonging to the Party in Office, who turn themseles into Lords of their Employers, the People! Political Independence of the People is a must for the citizens of Zambia, as a Second Liberation. Thereafter, we go for the Third Liberation struggle, namely Economic independence!

  2. If Mr HH knows more about Chitotela’s corrupt activities and has evidence, why not come out and surrender such information to the inestigative wings for action. This man is just good at telling lies to alarm the nation like he did with the presidential election petition where he couldn’t produce any evidence in the constitutional 14 days.

    • concerned citizen, you will also be made poor by direct theft by ruthless PF officials whom you seem to excuse. You can’t even prove that the privatization has done anything adverse actually. Just repeating useless noise from those who wish to deflect the reality of what the PF government is doing to the country.
In fact, this theft and the rest being perpetrated by PF will leave Zambians much poorer as it’s money being stolen directly from Zambian people.
      Stop being so blind.
