CBU students on class boycott

Students at the Copperbelt University in Kitwe have staged a class boycott demanding among other things a 45 percent increment on their allowances.

Acting Copperbelt University Students Union-COBUSU, President Gerald Chiluba says the students will not go back to class until education Minister Dr. JOHN PHIRI addresses their demands.

He said the last time the students received an increment on their Meal, book, project and accommodation allowances was in 2011.

Mr. Chiluba has told ZNBC News in an interview that students want to know when the funds that were allocated towards the construction of hostels in the 2014 national budget will be in the school accounts.

He says the issue of accommodation is another critical challenge at the country’s second highest institution of learning, resulting in many students finding cheaper accommodation in the shanty compounds of Kitwe.

Mr. Chiluba also charged that COBUSU President Kingsley Chinyama together with his academic affairs secretary Miselo Mumba are walking to Lusaka to go and meet the minister over students demands.
