I am beginning to worry about the degenerating moral fibre of my country where people are accepting that President Edgar Lungu is a drunk and an alcoholic, but that its ok to be an alcoholic and a drunk.

I find this highly reprehensible and it must be rebutted for the fallacy it represents. In the Post Newpaper of today, 17th March 2015, a Pastor going by the name of Pastor Bob Sinamushanga says that… “prayers for President Lungu’s speedy recovery will be in vein if the Head of State does not abandon his beer drinking.”

Pastor Bob Sinamushanga said that it was a well known fact that President Lungu was an alcoholic who used to drink heavily with files of his clients in the Bar. He went to say that President Lungu used to be so drunk that he would be carried out of the Bar with files of his clients left to be looked after the bar-tenders.

This information comes barely a day after Dr. Ludwig Sondashi expressed a similar sentiment. Many people expressed similar sentiments even before the 20th January 2015 elections. In other words, it is an irrefutable fact that President Edgar Lungu is an alcoholic.

Having stated the above facts, I wish to state that it is my understanding that the bible is against drunkenness. Since Zambia is Christian Nation, I wish to implore on everyone concerned that President Lungu’s ascendency to the Presidency is against what this country stands for as a Christian Nation. Zambia does not deserve to have a person in power who is an alcoholic. The Holy Bible in the following verses makes it clear what God thinks about drunkenness.

1. EPHESIANS 5:18 – “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;”
2. PROVERBS 20:1 – “Wine [is] a mocker, strong drink [is] raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.”
3. “LUKE 21:34 – “And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and [so] that day come upon you unawares.”
4. ISAIAH 28:7 – “But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble [in] judgment.”

It is clear that the Holy Bible abhors alcoholism and drunkenness. In fact the Bible says whoever is a drunk is not wise (Proverbs 20). I have tried to explain to my colleagues that people who voted for Edgar Lungu did a foolish thing! This is because the person they voted for is foolish! He is a drunk. He is an alcoholic. The Bible categorizes a drunk as a foolish person.
