A Lusaka banker, Pamela Gondwe, is on the run after robbing her employers. Gondwe, a cashier at Barclays Bank’s Longacres branch is said to have fled the country with US$400,000 (roughly K5.2 million) in cash.

She is said to have stolen the money from a vault at Longacres branch were she worked as a custodian of the dollar vault.

Gondwe reportedly left a suitcase in the dollar vault over the weekend and only did the packing and taking off with the dollars on Monday, June 10.

According to a source, she has a Ghanaian man whom she recently visited and most of her colleagues said she is fond of the same man and she speaks highly of him.

“Pamela appears to have had gained her work mate’s trust to the extent that she was allowed to leave a brand new suitcase in the vault on Friday last week and on Monday her fellow custodian momentarily left her in the vault alone to have lunch. It was at this point that Pamela stuffed the dollars in the suitcase and sneaked out of the branch using the back door. She even managed to deposit some money at the Barclays airport branch on the same day the theft occurred,” a source revealed .

Two years ago Pamela published a book for which she received a number of awards and reviews. Ironically the book was titled ‘tears in a suitcase’.

Her Facebook account reveals a woman who had increasingly become restless and full of wonderlust. One of her last posts read: “The gladdest moments, me thinks, is a departure into unknown lands. Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.”

  2. What a lapse! How can you allow one person to remain in the vault when the rule of thumb is there there shall be dual control of the vault. Management have a lot of explaining to do. I tell you these low level workers in banks face a lot of financial challenges. Banks seem to remunerate the managers more than the the other cadres. $400,000 is a whooping ZMW5.6million, what a sum!!
