The Treatment Advocacy and Literacy Campaign (TALC), an HIV/AIDS NGO, is calling on Guidance and Religious Affairs Minister Godfridah Sumaili to ban “Men of God” claiming to cure HIV/AIDS through “prayers and anointing water” and stopping people living with HIV from taking medication.

TALC national director Felix Mwanza says it is shocking that the church that is supposed to be a sanctuary and a place of peace and hope is now being turned into a commercial place where all sorts of ‘anointing water’ are being sold as cures to a lot of ailments including HIV/Aids.

Mwanza is concerned that of late, the electronic media is awash with people being paraded giving testimonies that they have been cured from HIV after being prayed for and taking anointing water.

He states that the claim that one tests HIV negative after taking the anointing water for a month should in actual fact be attributed to the ARVs which reverse the HIV in one’s body.

he has since called on the Minister Of Guidance And Religious Affairs to ban these religious leaders who have taken advantage of people living with HIV to make money as well as derail efforts from the government and partners of keeping the HIV pandemic under control.

“So the claim that one tests HIV negative after taking the anointing water for a month should in actual fact be attributed to the ARVs which reverse the HIV virus in one’s body. We call upon the Minister of Guidance and Religious affairs to ban these ’religious leaders’ who have taken advantage of people living with HIV to make money as well as derail efforts from the Government and partners of keeping the HIV pandemic under control,” Mwanza said in a statement.

“Since the church mother bodies have failed to control their flock it’s time that the Minister is encouraged to issue a ‘Statutory Instrument’ to regulate the way business should be conducted in the Church. Further we call upon the Minister to deport all fake church leaders suspected to have come from other countries and are in the fore front of claiming that they can cure HIV.”
