Tobacco Board of Zambia TBZ Board Chairperson Rhidah Mung’omba has described the anti-tobacco campaign as a threat to the tobacco sector.

Mung’omba says the initiators of the campaign did not look at tobacco in a broader angle, adding that this will affect the economy of countries such as Malawi whose economy is highly dependent on tobacco farming.

And TBZ says more than four hundred million people in Africa are directly supported by tobacco farming.

And TBZ Chief Executive Officer James Kasongo says Zambian grown tobacco is among the crop that contributes highly to foreign exchange globally.

Kasongo says ninety per cent of tobacco grown within the region is exported as green leaf.

He notes the need for people to invest in tobacco farming because it is more of a foreign exchange crop for Zambia and has the potential to boost the economy.

One Response to Anti-tobacco campaign a threat to tobacco farming – TBZ

  1. Don’t be silly, you can diversify to another crop. Diseases that come from tobacco are more harmful to the economy as they make people too sick to work, they spend more money seeking treatment, etc
