A heroes send off as Chipolopolo off to South Africa for AFCON

Zambian soccer fans have given a heroes send off to the Chipolopolo Boys, the country’s National Team as it flew out to Johannesburg on Wednesday to begin their final training camp ahead of their Africa title defence in January 2013.

Dozens of soccer fans thronged Kenneth Kaunda International Airport to see of the Chipolopolo Boys who were last week awarded as the Best Team in Africa after they won the Africa Cup this year for the first time. Operations were almost interrupted as the fans jostled at the airport in Lusaka to say ‘bye’ to the victorious national team.

The team comprising of 17 members flew out in separate planes from Lusaka and Ndola on the Copperbelt to South Africa where they will be joined by Zambian players based in that country.
According to mtn football.com, fourteen players flew out from Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka led by captain Christopher Katongo plus midfielders Rainford Kalaba and Isaac Chansa.

Three others who included Orlando Pirates striker Collins Mbesuma took off from their respective bases on the Copperbelt via Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport in Ndola. The Power Dynamos duo of midfielder Mukuka Mulenga and goalkeeper Joshua Titima also flew directly to Johannesburg from Ndola.

Coach Herve Renard and his first assistant Patrice Beaumelle left ahead of the team on Monday.

And the remaining South Africa-based player who include goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene, Joseph Musonda and Noah Chivuta were expected to link up with the rest of their team mates on Wednesday evening.

Zambia will set up training camp in Johannesburg until January 11, when they fly back to Zambia to face Norway in their penultimate friendly in Ndola on January 12.

They will then head to Nelspruit after the friendly where they face Namibia in their final build-up game on January 15.

And prior to the two friendly’s, African champions face Morocco on January 8 in Johannesburg.
