Eight members of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church in Livingstone have been hospitalized after getting teargassed by police.

This happened after Congregants at Namatama SDA Church were besieged by a combined team of law enforcement agencies which includes Zambia Police (ZP), Zambia Air Force (ZAF) , Zambia National Service (ZNS) and Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in a joint operation that was meant at rooting out drugs and illicit substances in Malota Township.

A church service was interrupted on the morning of June 22 when Police and other security agencies dispersed the congregants using teargas in a bid to disrupt illegal activities in Malota Compound.

Namatama SDA First Elder David Sikwati confirmed the development to the Journalists in an interview saying eight people have been admitted at Livingstone Central Hospital.

He said he is disappointed with the act by the police wondering why trained officers would act in such a manner. The visibly angry church Elder said it was unprofessional the way the police handled the matter by tear gassing worshipers.

Meanwhile, one if the victim Winnie Hampande said that they are shocked with the situation as they found themselves at the hospital without realizing.

And another victim Edwin Chakatala says that the act by the police was unethical as the church is not a place for criminals.
