525 people die in 2023 2nd quarter from Road Traffic Accident

Zambia has recorded 525 deaths from Road Traffic Accidents captured in the Second Quarter of 2023 from 1st April to 30th June.

In total, the Zambia Police Service Traffic Department recorded 9679 road traffic accidents country-wide, with 421 of those classified as fatal.

According to a statement by Zambia Police issued by the Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga indicates that 919 were recorded as serious injury road traffic accidents in which 1, 604 persons were seriously injured, with 1, 844 been slight injury road traffic accident in which 2639 persons were slightly injured.

Hamoonga says the total number of casualties in the second quarter of 2023 was 4,768, with Lusaka Province having the highest number of road traffic accidents with 5601, followed by Copperbelt with 1,257.

Central Province had 717 traffic accidents, Southern had 567, North-Western recorded 370, Eastern had 352, Luapula with 259, Western with 204, Muchinga with 178 and Northern Province with 174.

Hamoonga says an increase in road traffic accidents in comparison to the second quarter of 2022 were 8,438 accidents were recorded, indicating an increase by 1,238, with 421 been fatal, a decrease by 15 from the figure in 2023.

He further says 5638 road traffic accidents were recorded as damage only in the first quarter of 2022 as compared to 6,495 recorded in this year’s quarter, indicating an increase by 857.

Meanwhile, Hamoonga says that K12, 202,397 was collected as Admission of Guilty fines in 2022 as compared to K15, 106,514 collected in this year’s quarter under review.
