5 criminals on police wanted list shot dead during fire exchange

Five suspected criminals have been shot dead by police in Chililabombwe District on the Copperbelt.

Police say the five are ex-convicts who have been on the wanted list for the offences of Theft of Motor Vehicles and Aggravated Robberies on the Copperbelt.

Copperbelt Provincial Police Chief Peacewell Mweemba says the sixth suspect, believed to have been armed with an AK 47 riffle, managed to escape.

Mweemba says police have recovered a black pistol and a Toyota Surf which has been parked at Chililabombwe police station.

He explained that the incident occurred yesterday around 16:00 hours after a tip off from members of the public.

Mweemba said the officers made a follow up on the outskirts of Kasumbalesa boarder were they cornered the gang and engaged in an exchange of fire with the suspected criminals.

He said in a statement to ZNBC News, that the bodies of the suspects have been deposited at Kakoso Hospital Mortuary.
