186 Cholera cases, four deaths in Presidential Minister’s Constituency

Four people have died out the 186 cholera out break cases recorded in Mpulungu District of the Northern Province, reports Zambian Eye.

This came to light after Minister of Health Dr. Chitalu Chilufya led, a Multi-Sectoral Team which included Area Member of Parliament and Presidential Affairs Minister Freedom Sikazwe, Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU)Permanent Secretary Chanda Kabwe, Director of Zambia Public Health Institute, Dr. Victor Mukonka and a team from the Ministry of Water and Sanitation.

During the on-site interview with Journalists, Dr Chilufya said the consumption of contaminated water from shallow wells by the locals had brought about the outbreak.

He said the multi sectoral team would mount a robust response to the outbreak.

“The response we have put in place includes, an improved access to clean and safe water through use of water Bowsers and mounting of tanks. Distribution of Chlorine to all households”, Dr Chilufya announced.

“We shall Intensify health education to sensitize the residents on the importance of hygiene practices. Vaccination of all residents is also being considered. Drilling of solar powered bole holes.”

Dr Chilufya said it is sad that four deaths have been recorded. He has since announced a fish ban to be affected till the situation is normalized as it is the intention of government that cholera does not spread to other districts by the people traveling to and from Mpulungu to buy and sell fish.

Meanwhile Sikazwe has asked the residents of Mpulungu to cooperate with government if the Cholera situation is to be quickly arrested in the area.

Sikazwe who is also Area MP said the fight against cholera could not be left to government alone but required concerted efforts from all stakeholders especially the community.
