President Lungu during the Day of National Prayer

The Patriotic Front government has declared Monday, January 2018 as a day for National prayers to stop the outbreak oholera and rainfall.

Zambia has been hit by outbreak of Cholera recording over 2000 cases which has grounded some normal operations in the country including suspending of opening of schools.

Religious and National Guidance Minister Godfredah Sumaili has announced the development. She has directed that there should be no worshiping on Sunday even in areas where there is no ban saying the gathering should take place on Monday for between 2 to 3 hours.

The Minister has directed that the occasion must be taken serious and be observed by everyone.

She says apart from praying for the end of Cholera the nation will also be praying for rains which have been erratic.

Zambia in 2016 declared October 18 as a Day of National Prayer and Fasting. The Day is a public holiday. However, critics have accused the PF government of using the name of God in vain by deceiving the citizens who Christians saying their action is contrary to their actions following rampant corruption and abuse of human rights.

  1. Why every time, something happens, and because of your not responding to warnings of cholera in October , only to respond in January . Blame yourself for the dirty Government. Don’t bring GOD in your inefficiency . So many bad things has happened in this Government .its man made problem. Not GOD.

  5. There certain matters that require prayer but others require action by mankind. Hygience here is demanded of us all. Source funds to buy disfectants and get rid of the cholera bacteria which hibernates in filth or dirt. By this act of desperation, its like trying to find hunger with fasting. Instead of fasting, be practical and use scietific methods. Minister Sumaili, you idea is misplaced. Plese liase with Dr Chitalu in ministry of Heålth

  6. This is counter productive to have this prayer and fasting against cholera. Cholera is not a spırit that we may engage in spiriatual welfare. Prevention and cleanliness should hve been observed as early as October 2017.

  9. Can I ask Reverend Godfred Musumaili, the weather forcus shows that it will be raining on Monday and Tuesday, don’t lie to the public that, because of the prayers, it has rained NO. Just pray for your cholera, and cholera, you don’t need prayers, because it’s negligence on the part of the Government.

  10. Both issues are caused by us human beings due carelessness and greed. The majority of our impoverished citizens live conditions not fit for human beings. They drink water from shallow wells dug next to a pit latrine. They do not have tap and clean water. They sell all sorts of edibles in filthy environments full of flies. As for vegetables, they keep them fresh (while waiting for unsuspecting clients) all day by sprinkling them with some water – God knows where they get that water from.

Coming to the rain situation, we have caused this problem ourselves. In the name of development and clearing spaces for farming and settlement, we have depleted the forests. God created these things for a good reason – to create a natural balance. But we have tampered with His creation and we want to beg Him to give us rain! God must be very upset with us for destroying His creation. Therefore, the prayer should be centred on asking God to forgive us for messing up with His creation – the environment.

    • We should also pray for good governance. We should pray for increased transparency, accountability, media freedom and zero-tolerance to corruption.
