Some Co-accused to UPND president Hakainde Hichilema in the treason case have been tortured by the police, Jack Mwi
mbu who is one of the lawyers representing them has told the court.
Mwiimbu told the Magistrate court on Tuesday when the matter came up that the accused were severely tortured even to their private parts.
The lawyer also said that the accused were made to open their mouths and pepper sprayed in the mouth causing unimaginable pain.
Another defence lawyer Vincent Malambo asked the court to allow accused 1 who is Hakainde Hichilema to seek independent medical services.
Malambo also applied that the court order the police to allow visitation to Hichilema especially from family members and colleagues.
He has also applied that the accused be allowed to interact and inform his lawyers in privacy.
Malambo further applied that an investigation be launched to ascertain why a pastor the accused does not know visited him at midnight in jail.
Malambo a former Justice Minister under Frederick Chiluba administration asked the court to ensure that Hichilema is an accused and has not been convicted with any offence and must be treated humanly.
He also further pleaded with court that Hichilema be allowed reading materials in custody.
The state prosecutors applied for adjournment to allow them time to respond.
The Magistrate was expected to pass ruling at 3pm on the preliminary issues so far raised.
The treason case is supposed to be taken to the High court for trial.
