The United Party for National Development (UPND) says the Zambia Direct Democracy Movement (ZDDM) leader Edwin Sakala is not fit to replace the late MP for Kasenengwa Constituency Victoria Kalima.

Sakala, brother to the Daily Nation proprietor Richard Sakala, has declared interest to contest the Kasenengwa parliamentary seat following the death of Kalima on Monday.

He has since appealed to President Edgar Lungu and the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) to consider not fielding a candidate saying they should instead support him.

Sakala said in an interview with Feel Free radio in Chipata that the ZDDM has been supporting the PF since 2015, adding that there is need for the ruling party to return the favour by supporting his candidature.

But UPND National Chairperson for Youth, Sports and Child Development Michael Chuzu says Kalima was one of the few hardworking MPs in Chipata District and finding a suitable replacement for her will be difficult.

Chuzu told Breeze FM in an interview that it is surprising that the ZDDM President instead of mourning with the people of Kasenengwa is busy announcing his intentions to replaced the late Kalima.

Meanwhile, the Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) in Chipata district has described Sakala’s announcement of his intention to contest the Kasenengwa parliamentary seat as immature politics.

MMD Chipata Central Treasurer Alberto Phiri says he is disappointed that Sakala is already talking about contesting the seat, even before the late area Member of Parliament Victoria Kalima is put to rest.
