Saviour Chishimba versus ZRA – The Media in the crossfire

Lately, Dr. CHISHIMBA has made serious allegations against various individuals and institutions, allegations that have all been reported in the media. There have been some responses on the part of those accused but not quite like the response from Zambia Revenue Authority, ZRA. The latter has taken another step beyond merely refuting the allegations but also taking legal action. This action by the tax collector is instructive and requires pause and reflection.
Once, it was believed that the media was all-powerful such that what it reported was taken as gospel truth with the capability to make or destroy people or institutions. This view carried on unchallenged for years until some scholars discovered that this alleged power was checked against other sources of knowledge and information that media consumers were exposed to. This view holds true to a large extent.
So Dr. CHISHIMBA’s allegations may influence some sections of society but may be dismissed by others. But be that as it may, there are some sections of society, especially at a global level, that may not be privy to domestic dynamics. Without the latter, their views about Zambia may be influenced by allegations made by Dr. CHISHIMBA resulting in the country losing out on some opportunities that could have turned around the fortunes of millions for generations to come!
For this reason, the decision by ZRA is in the best interest of the country and ought to be embraced by anyone who feels that national interests are at stake. Where the media has not checked their story against the truth, public bodies that have been accused owe it to the Zambian people to not only present their side of the story but also send a strong message to would-be peddlers in information that they need to check their facts before they go public.
When all is said and done, the media space must be regarded by all and sundry as a sacred ground and fountain where only clean and decent informational exchange takes place.

  1. ZRA is being used by the Illegitimate Lungu govt as a tool of repression. ZRA has been politicised and is now fighting Lungu and PF’s wars of illegitimacy. ZRA as a Parastatal should be accountable to the Public and it is within Chishimba’s right to make ZRA Accountable. Its good ZRA has taken him to Court hoping to silence Chishimba. This will backfire. We are all behind u Mr Chishimba. Keep up the good fight for social justice and Good Governance. Right now ZRA is illegally auctioning the Post Assets even though the matter is still in Court. The illegitimate Lungu govt has no Respect for Rule of Law and Constitutionalism. They are violating Human Rights and Good Governance laws. This illegality is similar to illegalities committed by the Illegitimate Lungu Regime in the Handling of the Petition. To stop all these illegalities the Petition must be heard in Court.Petitioners cannot hope to get justice from Lungu’s compromised Courts.# Let the Petition be heard at ICJ without further delays.

    • This is what I keep saying! The battle between Chishimba and the ZRA is suppose to be the all the Opposition Parties versus the ZRA. Sadly, our Opposition Parties are so disunited to the extent that they fight each other. The Opposition in Zambia must unite otherwise you’ll perish under this PF regime. You must ADOPT THE ISRAELI BELIEF THAT SAYS: A DROP OF BLOOD OF ONE ISRAELI, IS A DROP OF BLOOD ON ALL JEWS! This is the Motto Israel exercises on Palestinians and this is why you see the State of Israel has survived from May 1948 when it was founded to date under Arabic hostilities. UNITE ZAMBIAN OPPOSITIONS, UNITE. What we are witnessing under the PF regime is just the beginning. Worst times are yet to come and if the opposition doesn’t unite now, we shall have our opposition to blame. The PF is a terrible Regimewhich will not stop anything to survive. UPND, FDD, UPP, MMD-NEVERS MUMBA UNITE WITH OTHER OPPOSITION PARTIES TO MÀKE A MEANINGFUL OPPOSITION TO THIS MONSTER CALLED THE PF OTHERWISE WE PERISH.

  2. Making people holding public offices to account for their mischief is important. Left alone, a human being is capable of self-destruction. But my take on any accusation is that two sides, ie the accuser and the accused should be given space to clear their sides with relevant authorities. In this case, let the courts of law deal with this matter. Anyone who is not privy to the case is simply being unfairly judgmental. Let Chishimba present his side of the matter before the court and let ZRA give its own side. The role of the court is to balance the issue and come to a conclusion. We outsiders may not have facts Dr. Chishimba has raised. Therefore, we are not competent enough to pass judgment.

  3. The problem here zeb is we like mixing everything with politics. What Kelly and M.M are saying makes good and fair sense. The question is or should be, who started the ball rolling? Was it ZRA or Dr? Dr came out first and raised an accusing finger. ZRA simply responded in self defence. It was not the other way round. Therefore it the story has come into the public dormain, then the public deserves to do the truth. And its only the court who can give a fair judgement. Period.

  5. Can an institution like ZRA sue for malicious damage or defamation. Does it have the ‘locus standi?’ Waiting for the court to interpret the law.

  6. What is ZRA scared of? Just bring back the money. You’re used to swindling people.
