Smallholder farmers are expected to head discussions at the African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF), a high level continental meeting under the theme Accelerating Africa’s path to prosperity: growing economies through African agriculture.
The Southern Africa Confederation of Agricultural Unions (SACAU) will join representatives from African governments, private sector, donors and development partners at the forum from 4-8 September in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
AGRF will put the spotlight on agriculture as the key driver of African economies and establish what it will take to ensure agriculture and agribusiness are driving inclusive and sustainable rural development.
SACAU is a knowledge partner of the AGRF and co-chairs the Youth in Agriculture Thematic Working Group (TWG).
“We look forward to continue exploring ways of supporting farmers, including young agripreneurs, in captitalising on existing opportunities to drive the sector forward,” said Mr Ishmael Sunga SACAU CEO.
“A strong and inclusive policy environment will be one of the critical factors that would drive this transformation,” he said.
After Seizing the Moment at AGRF 2016 and securing political, policy, and financial commitments of more than US $30 billion, African leaders must move decisively to harness this surge of support for agriculture and ensure it creates jobs and drives economic growth across the continent—particularly for 300 million young Africans coming into the job market over the next 15 years.
SACAU president, Dr Theo de Jager and Benito Eliasi SACAU Capacity Development Advisor will join Mr Sunga as part of the SACAU AGRF delegation.
