Hakainde Hichilema says Tuesday’s by-elections results which his party – UPND lost to PF in all the three seats is gain to him.

Commenting on the results, HH as he is commonly referred to said his party has once again demonstrated that the UPND is providing the only major opposition to the current PF Government.

“The inroads we have made into Eastern Province and our strong performance in the Senga Hill parliamentary by-election also provide further evidence that the UPND’s popularity continues to surge across the length and breadth of the country,” says HH in a statement to Zambian Eye on Wednesday.

Below is his statement in full:

Statement on the recently concluded by-elections

We would like to start by thanking all UPND supporters and party members who worked hard throughout this by-election campaign.

Your energy and dedication is greatly appreciated. In these by-elections we have once again demonstrated that the UPND is providing the only major opposition to the current PF Government. The inroads we have made into Eastern Province and our strong performance in the Senga Hill parliamentary by-election also provide further evidence that the UPND’s popularity continues to surge across the length and breadth of the country.

We would also like to congratulate the wining candidates and appeal to them to serve the public’s interest at all times, putting aside selfish or personal interests. However, it would seem that voter apathy was once more the real winner yesterday, with low turnouts recorded. Just 15% of registered voters are reported to have turned out in the Chawama parliamentary by-election.

Zambians, having been let down by government after government, are understandably fatigued by politics. Elected representatives must regain the confidence of the people by working hard, working in a transparent manner and serving the interest of all their constituents equally, and not just those that have voted for them. From the opposition we will continue to deliver our message that Zambians deserves better from their Government and that change is well within our reach in 2016.

As the UPND has rehearsed time and time again we believe the staggering and unprecedented amount of by-elections held under the PF Government has been a colossal waster of money that could be better spent on much needed investments into our health and education systems. It has also taken up a large amount of Government time and attention when they should be focused on addressing the plight of the people and not campaigning here, there and everywhere. Our position remains that by improving the credibility of the electoral process and introducing the new constitution we can avoid the need for so many by-election and thereby avoid this waste.

We must now all work together to ensure free and fair tripartite elections in 2016. We are please to note that President Lungu has acquiesced to our demand for the nomination of a new Chairperson for the ECZ. We must now turn our attention to scrutiny of the nomination, the upcoming voter registration exercise, and working with the ECZ to ensure problems presented by past elections are address, so that a level playing field and a transparent process for 2016 is ensured.

      • If being Tonga means wisdom then so be it. Why should I shy away from great wisdom because of tribe? are nsengas benefiting anything from Chagwa? No! infact it is the Bembas who are benefiting. Most of his appointments have been for Bembas. He speaks Bemba when addressing people even here in Lusaka where the majority speak Nyanja. For you who are obsessed with tribes, continue voting in people without a vision. Some of us will evaluate candidates before we vote. My vote will go to HH again and again until he quits politics. The Kaingus are yours.

  2. Without doubt as a UPND supporter it has pained me, however, I appreciate words of encouragement from our leader HH who also need to be comforted congratulated for speerheading peace in political competition during and after elections. He(HH) has remained calm amidst provocation from visionless ruling party leaders and few of un reasoning cadres. HH and UPND let us continue monitoring and giving good advise to Edgar Lungu least we all fall into the bottomless pit of poverty due to lack of forsight by Edgar Lungu. We now look to God to help us get good President, good MPs and councillors in 2016 other than the violent and visionless PF.

  5. Can someone in UPND tell me why the UPND member of parliament don’t campaign like HH. I have never seen these guys campaigning like the way MMD and PF do. I only saw Moreen Mwanawasa campaigning for UPND in Chawama. How do they truly expect to win elections?? The UPND MP’s are showing us that they are just in it for there pockets. They maybe worse off than PF if voted into power. HH wake-up and find MP’s that will work with you. If this attitude continues, forget about 2016.

  11. I am a staunch supporter of HH and follow every article concerning him and his political career although based in the UK.

HH would be the best person to lead Zambia as opposed to ECL. ECL is a clown and does not have any quality of a president in fact he is an embarrassment to the Zambian people abroad and I am sure those well-meaning people at home. However HH’s campaign approach is suitable for the learned people – Western world, where people are able to reason and compare the current economical and political situation. HH MUST CHANGE his campaign strategy and try to get close to the illiterates who the majority of the voters eg the kaponyas and the marketeers so that the notion of being pompous – which is currently shrouded around him is thrown away. Appearing a gentleman in a poverty stricken society where the majority of the people don’t understand or even know the difference been being poor as they were born and grew up in such unrelenting hardships. HH should start mingling with the rejects of society (kaponyas etc) in order to win their hearts and let them accept him as one of their own. The majority of Zambian people don’t think with their brains but with their stomachs.

UPND must devise a robust strategy of campaigning and possibly merge with Edith Nawakwi – the brain-boxer and fearless campaigner. HH is too humble to be able to wrestle power from the savage infested PF government. UPND MP much get vicious in their campaigns and if it means bribing the would be voters, let it be so after all that is what has been happening in the country, and once in power get back to your normal self. Zambia is really ruined under ECL. Us people abroad want to return back home but are wary of political and economic situation.
Let us work together as Zambians and dig out the rigging strategies planted in PF and have a leader with vision and not a conman who is satisfied with crams from the Chinese.

    • I appreciate the advise given to UPND about how the UPND leader can make himself popular with the grass roots. The other strategy would be to field some of the MPs on UPND ticket not from the Bantu botatwe group. There other tribes whose sons and daughters have settled in Southern province and have contributed to the economical turn around of the province. In that way the tribal tug will slowly begin to be removed from UPND as a party.
