The PF through it’s media director Sunday Chanda has released this article or letter below said to have been written by son to vocal South Africa based law professor Michelo Hansungule:

Prof Hansungule can not fight for Human Rights-Thomas Hansungule

Thomas Hansungule

Dear Editor,

I have seen my father, Prof. Michelo Hansungule champion so called human rights causes in the media and on many local and foreign forums.
This man has been cruel to me and my mother and his acts have been evil against us.

My mother is Christine Kandeya Phiri, I was born in 1980 when Prof.Hansungule was at the University of Zambia (UNZA)at that time with my mother.
I have enclosed a copy of one of the letters he wrote to me.
At that stage I wanted him to just be a father and pay for my school fees.
He refused to take my calls and urged me to commit suicide as an easy way out of the future he said I didn’t have.

He stated that he regrets ever being part of my birth.

Prof. Hansungule made my mother pregnany when she was a student at the University of Zambia pursuing, an education degree.
She was forced to leave school to go back to Chipata to give birth to me.

My mother told me that Prof. Hansungule could not marry her because he claimed his relatives would not allow him to marry from another tribe other than a Tonga.

And the trouble is that I am a spit image of this man.

He gave me the name Thomas after his late brother.

She returned to UNZA afterwards to complete her studies.

When she died I became homeless. So I travelled to Lusaka to meet my father.

That time I traced my father and went to his house.

He was leaving in Chakeluka Road in Olympia Park behind Manda Hill.

The man met me at the gate, and refused to take me in the house.

He took me for a walk while threatening me with an arrest and advised that I immediately go back to Chipata.

He said he could only help if I went back to Chipata.

He was lying. He never helped and he has never helped me.

Later in my life I tried to track him,I was told he was now based at Lund University in Sweden.

I was desperately looking for school fees and support. So I went to the Swedish Embassy in Lusaka.
The staff were so helpful that they found his number and called him.
When he learnt it was me, he was so annoyed that he insulted me.
But to look responsible to the people at the Embassy he told them to give him his email address and said that he was going to help me.

But shortly afterwards he insulted me, threatened me and said : “This is why you were not supposed to live”!

Is this a man who claims to fight for Justice? For equality? for Human Rights? and let alone for the down trodden?.

He was so insensitive that he wrote those awful things to me when I was young and vulnerable.

This man put me through so much abuse and pain as shown by the emails.

To his shame and to God’s grace and favour, I managed to complete and obtained a bachelor of agricultural science degree from the University of Zambia.

I managed to acquire this, also thanks to the a GRZ bursary scheme.

I am trusting the Lord for a job.

But I have since forgiven him for being absent in my life, for failing to support me, for this abuse, and for failing to acknowledge me and for failing to treat me just as a human being let alone his own son.

I have chosen to speak because I am always irritated by his hypocrisy and pretence he displays in public when he presents himself as one that fights for Justice and Human Rights.

  1. So what is your problem sonny? You have gone at length to unearth your mother’s troubled past and your own frustrations and failure. In all honesty, you have now grown up.
You have just become part of the statistics now that you have publicly revealed your status as an illegitimate child.
Let me advise you to stop popping your nose into your father / mother intimate relationship whether be it a failed one or otherwise.

    • He is talking about his father not standing on solid ground to claim to champion human rights. How difficult is that to understand? Hansungule abandoned his own biological son and today he wants to stand for other people’s children?
